I'll be using the reverse outline method to find those missing transitions and gaps in information. There was one particular place where I didn't elaborate and connect two ideas together, so they seem irrelevant to each other. In those subsections, I'll elaborate on those ideas that I didn't develop fully. I might end up separating some sections into subsections to make sure that I'm not overwhelming the reader with too many ideas in one section. Another problem that I noticed, which also happened in the previous assignment, was elaborating on ideas I introduced, but never really developing them. There are places in my writing where I was missing citations for quotes and where it was unclear whether the information I was using was my own idea or something I got from my research. One of the main things I need to work on when revising my Wikipedia entry is citations. This is the strategy I'll be using for revising my other works since it was how I found the gaps of missing information. For this technique, we create a reverse outline, meaning that as we read through our work, we create an outline with the main ideas of each paragraph in the order that they are presented. I also learned a new revising strategy that was introduced to us two weeks ago when we made a revising plan for our first assignment. Again, this has to do with me not being conscious of my reader's point of view and wrongly assuming they know the same details that I do. I tend to introduce new ideas in the middle of my paragraphs or mention something without elaborating on it. While reading through my drafts of my previous assignments, I noticed that one of the problems I'm having is focusing on one one topic in my paragraphs. Most of the writing I have done for the past two weeks include revising drafts of previous assignments and practicing formal writing through mathematical proofs. These new writing skills will be extremely helpful in other classes now that I've established a writing process and know what to keep in mind when writing for a specific genre. This is because each assignment was very unique and different from anything I had ever written before. These assignments also gave me plenty of practice with weaving together our research and ideas.įor all these assignments that wrote, I always had to keep in mind who I was writing for and the writing conventions for certain genres. I spent a good amount of time validating multiple sources until I could find credible ones. My Wikipedia entry required sources from social media, gaming news websites, forums, videos, and interviews. However, the topics that I chose to write about required very different research than from what I had used before. I had some experience with academic research prior to taking this class. These are errors that can only be seen from other points of view other than the author, who already knows a whole lot more than the reader about what he's writing.Īnother requirement in our assignments was incorporating research. Their feedback pointed out flaws in flow and missing pieces of content. The feedback from multiple peers finally convinced me that I must go through multiple drafts.
However, in this class, multiple drafts were a requirement, and for each draft we made revisions based on peer reviews. Before UWP1, I always took revisions and drafting phases for granted, since I only looked at the surface errors of my papers rather than content. I have to go through various brainstorming and rough drafting phases to first get my ideas written down, and then organize and refine those ideas through outlines and revisions. I learned about the "shitty" first draft phase. Those aspects include the drafting and revising processes, gathering and organizing credible research, and genre/audience awareness.īy practicing my writing consistently, I established a solid writing process that works for me. Through UWP1Y, I have been able to practice and improve aspects of my writing that I never really payed much attention to before.
