It os one of the few books where I watched the movie first. " I couldn't understand the ending.And the "Buttercup's baby" too. Reading the book was a little bit like coming home. My daughters loved the movie and played it over and over. William Goldman wrote both the book and the screenplay so it is very much like the movie. " One of my favorite books- read it in high school and have loved it since! So great. " I didn't really appreciate the edits made by Goldman and want to read the original, but it's a great story!! " - Maddy, Don't love the annotations, felt kid of self-indulgent, especially the intros and outro. In places it's excellent, with a wending fourth wall plot (very Tristram Shandy) and a light fairy tale, and other places it's plodding, overly clever and far too convoluted. " Much different than the movie, which I simply adore, but it still has the thrills I enjoyed watching. " I love the movie more, but not a bad read! It's probably up there on my list of favorite love stories. " Reads just like the movie but a little better. I read an anniversary edition, so there were lots of extras. " A good read, especially if you love the film. " Everyone raves about this book, but I found it laborious to read and am just settling for the movie. " Absolutely brilliant! Variations between the screen play and the novel are conceivable ) and it's a joy to read no matter how many times you've seen the movie " - Beth, I realize this is a fictional account, but I just found it humourless and it left a bad taste in my mouth. Honestly the book just got off on the wrong foot with me when the author spent 30 pages complaining about his fat son and unhappy marriage. Maybe it is some sort of meta-humour that the author removed supposedly super boring parts to put in his own boring parts, but if so I did not find it funny. Also I did not like the asides by the author, which I thought were boring. The book is really misogynist with Westley hitting and berating Buttercup, calling her his property, and Buttercup herself saying how stupid she is and can't do simple math. Maybe it is because the movie is one of my most cherished movies, but I don't think that is all of it. If you like stories like that, then you'll like this book better than I did. The book's story is diluted by telling the story of the author. Which is what Goldman's book turned out to be what with all the asides, details about the book contract, namedropping stories about famous people he's met and other famous and successful screenplays he's written, romance, thrills etc. The Goldman book is a multi-layered story of Goldman writing an abridgement of a book based on a book his father read to him as a child which he abridged as he was reading it because the original was rather too epic. The book he reads (and what the majority of the film is comprised of) is an epic tale of adventure, thrills, romance etc. The film is a two-layered story, Grandpa reading a book to a sick kid. It was an abridged version of the supposedly abridged Goldman version of the supposedly original S. " I was thoroughly convinced by this book! Goldman, you fooled me to the end! " - Jenny, " If you think the movie was good, the book is a hundred times better. I will pick this book up and open to a random page when feeling blue - it never disappoints!!
